I have been taking photographs as a serious amateur since the early 1970s. I started out with my Minolta SRT 101 shooting black and white photographs (virtually all with Tri-X film). I developed my own negatives and printed my photographs in a darkroom set up in my basement. Somewhere along the way, I switched to Canon equipment and have stuck with that brand ever since (except I use a Tamron lens). About four years ago, I made the switch to digital and now shoot exclusively with that format.
I learned most of what I know about photography by being a member of the Latent Image Workshop, Silver Spring, Maryland (now defunct) headed by Lowell Anson Kenyon. This was a great Workshop with a great group of photographers and Lowell was a great leader/teacher. Each month we would bring in three prints, compete them against those from the other club members and then Lowell would critique all of the prints entered that month. We also participated in camera club competitions such as the Greater Washington Camera Clubs (GWCC). After departing the Washington, D.C. area for awhile in the late 1970s, I dropped out of the Latent Image Workshop and have been taking photographs mostly on my own or with a few friends.
In the 1980s, I lived in Naples, Italy for one year and then in southern Spain for five years (at some point I will scan negatives taken during that period and upload them to my web page). Another major influence on my photography came while living in Spain. I met another American couple, Marci and Jonas Fineman and periodically, the three of us would set out on a photo shoot – Jonas would drive and Marci and I would take the photos. It turned out that Marci was an outstanding amateur photographer as well. Marci’s specialty was people. She served as a great influence on me on how to take photographs of people (although you will never see her photographs on display, I believe her photographs of people are as good or better than most professional work I have seen). Marci and I teamed up on a few exhibitions during our time in Spain.
